WUHAN, CHINA — Yang Youde, who lives on the outskirts of Wuhan, has fended off two eviction attempts using an improvised rocket launcher and ammunition made from fireworks.
Property confiscation is common in China, where many people are forced to give up homes and land to make way for roads, housing, and commercial development.
But Yang refuses to leave. During the latest eviction attempt, he held off 100 demolition workers by firing from a makeshift watchtower.
“I shot over their heads to frighten them,” he told China Daily of his attacks. “I didn’t want to cause any injuries.”
Yang’s rockets can travel over 100 yards and explode with a deafening bang, the newspaper said.
PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS — A 22-year-old man burst into a Burger King restaurant at closing time, pointed a pistol at the manager, and demanded money.
As the terrified employees looked on, the manager handed over the day’s proceeds to the robber.
In order to free up both hands to pick up the money, the robber set his pistol down on the counter. The manager immediately grabbed the weapon and shot the man in the leg.
The man was treated at a local hospital and jailed on charges of armed robbery.
