SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — A man suspected of burglarizing a church was apprehended by police after he left his cell phone, with a photo of himself on it, at the scene of the crime.
The suspect allegedly broke into the church and a church-owned RV and made off with items worth $10,000, including purses, watches, cash, and a laptop computer. Police said the man accidentally dropped his cell phone during the burglary.
A property crimes detective found a selfie of the suspect on the phone and recognized the background where the photo was taken. Police went to that location and found the suspect, along with the stolen items.
The man admitted to the thefts. He was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail.
DEERFIELD BEACH, FLORIDA — A man is behind bars after he abandoned a stolen vehicle and asked two undercover police officers for a ride.
Broward County sheriff’s deputies said the man abandoned a stolen Audi SUV on the side of Interstate 95, crossed the highway, jumped a fence, and approached the officers. who had been watching him from an unmarked patrol car.
“He asked for a ride, and our officers accommodated him,” a department spokesman said.
The deputies were part of a search team looking for the man, who had burglarized a home, stolen the Audi, and led deputies on a chase down Dixie Highway.
NORRIDGEWOCK, MAINE — Police armed with assault rifles descended on a man’s home after members of a tree-removal crew reported that the homeowner approached them with a gun tucked in his waistband, yelling insults.
The gun turned out to be a life-sized tattoo of a handgun on the man’s stomach.
Michael Smith, who works nights, was asleep when the tree crew woke him up at about 10 a.m. Tuesday as they trimmed branches near his home. He went outside shirtless and yelled at the workers to leave. Smith told police the tattoo has never been a problem before.
No charges were filed.
