BRUGES, BELGIUM — Frustrated that the city’s medieval cobblestone streets are constantly backed up by beer trucks, the City of Bruges announced plans to build an underground beer pipeline capable of carrying 1,500 gallons per hour. The pipeline is expected to remove about 500 beer trucks from the city streets.
The pipeline will begin at the historic De Halve Maan brewery and end at its bottling plant on the edge of town. The beer will make the journey of two-plus miles in about 10 minutes.
A spokesman said there is much talk locally about surreptitiously tapping into the pipeline, but officials aren’t worried. The pipeline will be monitored electronically for leaks and illegal tapping points.
The pipeline is a city project, but the brewery will pick up the tab.
