I have no plans to watch the 2016 Republican National Convention on TV, and here are my top 10 reasons why.
—————
10) Donald Trump is an egotistical gasbag. He is the most unqualified, least suitable nominee for public office in the history of Earth. He is wholly unfit for any position of public trust at all, much less the presidency.
9) Trump has been in the public eye for decades, mostly making a fool of himself. At this point, I’ve had a dozen lifetimes worth of Donald Trump. I’m sick of hearing from him and about him. Especially when he wears that stupid Make America Great Again hat.
8) Mike Pence. Pence is just another jackleg Republican governor. And you don’t get much higher on the despicability scale than a Republican governor.
7) A GOP convention amounts to a clown show where the clowns take themselves seriously. The event attracts the most hidebound, doctrinaire conservative crazies and concentrates them in one place. That much bad karma is a health risk to a normal person.
6) Anything that is remotely notable will be regurgitated and rehashed for days on the news anyway. I can try, but I won’t miss much.
5) All those predictable speeches — I could have written them myself. Hillary bad. Black and brown people bad. Must build wall. Nation in peril. Climate change not real. Cut taxes for rich.
4) Podium time is scheduled for such GOP luminaries as Willie Robertson, Scott Baio, Newt Gingrich, Ted Cruz, Jerry Falwell, Jr., Reince Priebus — oh, I can‘t go on. For all I know, Ted Nugent and Wayne LaPierre will be trotted out, too.
3) I don’t want to hear the delegates fawning over Ronald Reagan. Reagan was a two-bit actor who believed in UFOs. He tripled the federal budget deficit. He sold weapons to Iran, illegally, to fund the rebels in Nicaragua, illegally. Reagan is the one who needed impeaching.
2) I don’t want to look at the vapid Trump clan standing arrayed across the stage like the Usual Suspects.
1) The whole Republican vibe — the mindset of the Fox News crowd — is just too depressing, pitiful, and sad. When I think about all of those frightened, delusional people who actually look to a charlatan like Trump as their champion, I weep.
